Why Neural Therapy?

Neural Therapy is a treatment for resetting the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The autonomic regulation of every cell, every cellular space, every organ and tissue determines the whole person health of an individual. Open regulation is the ANS's ability to flow between parasympathetic and sympathetic branches without interference. Neural Therapy frees the ANS of interference, also called the interference field, to produce health. We owe the discovery of the interference field to Ferdinand Huneke, MD in 1940, when he did the first scar injection.

"An interference field, or focus, produces a change in the cell environment, hence in the reactivity capacity of individual organs and the organism as a whole. The interference field can set off pain in any part of the body distant to the interference field and within its own local segmental area. Any stress which exceeds the limits of tolerance sets off a shock reaction in the autonomic nervous system. This shock reaction is the body's defensive response. It is irrelevant in this context whether the stimulus is a chemical, physical, bacterial, or a psychological irritant". (Peter Dosch, MD)   see sidebar

Neural Therapy was originally developed in Germany by the Huneke brothers. It involves the injection of Procaine (also known as Novocaine without the sulfite preservatives), a common local anesthetic, into various but very specific areas. Neural Therapy is based on the theory that trauma can produce long-standing disturbances in the electrochemical function of tissues. Among the types of tissues affected by trauma include scars, nerves or a cluster of nerves called ganglions. A correctly administered Neural Therapy injection can often instantly and lastingly resolve chronic long standing illness and chronic pain.

Although an estimated 35% of all West German physicians use Neural Therapy to some extent and in the rest of the Western World it has become one of the most widely used modalities in the treatment of chronic pain, most physicians in the United States are unfamiliar with Neural Therapy. Here in the United States, "trigger point injections" are commonly used for pain based on the work of Janet Travell, M.D. It is not widely known but Dr. Travell learned about trigger points while studying in Germany and then returned home to write the reference book widely used in the United States on Trigger Point injections. However, Trigger Point injections are just one type of Neural Therapy. Neural Therapy is also often very effective for other medical illnesses such as allergies, asthma, chronic bowel problems, depressions, kidney disease, pain, headaches/migraines, prostate and female problems, infertility, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and many other conditions.

Neural Therapy FAQ

1. How many Neural Therapy treatments are typically necessary?
Sometimes one treatment will resolve the problem. More often, only a partial improvement follows each treatment. Three to six treatments are the average number to achieve lasting resolution of a chronic condition. What Neural Therapy does for many of my patients is to open the door to allow the other healing modalities to finish the job. Less often do we see the dramatic miraculous response that the Huneke Brothers described, rather it is a gradual resolution of the dysfunction and a return to optimal health.

Neural Therapy is just another modality available to you. Combining it with a personalized nutritional/metabolic/detoxification program is one of the most powerful healing tools available.

2. Where are interference fields found?
The best-known location for interference fields is in surgical scars. However, they also may be found in teeth, in autonomic ganglia (nerve "junction boxes," separate from the brain and spinal cord, that look after regulatory processes of organs or regions of the body), at sites of nerve entrapment, in organs, at sites of somatic dysfunction (joint or muscle mechanical dysfunction) or even in puncture sites.

3. How does neural therapy work?
The tissues in which interference fields are found can be shown to have abnormal cell membrane resting potential (abnormal electrical charges on the cell surfaces). This creates electrophysiological instability and abnormal afferent signals (nerve signals to the spinal cord and brain) which, in turn, trigger abnormal autonomic nervous system responses. Procaine has a membrane-stabilizing effect (much like lidocaine in treating cases of irregular heartbeat or cardiac arrhythmia). By restoring cell membrane potential to normal for even a short time, cellular metabolism improves, a healthier local environment is created and the system stabilizes.

4. Is neural therapy about nerves?
Despite the name, neural therapy is not usually treatment of nerves. However, the nervous system, especially the autonomic nervous system, is very much involved.

5. What health conditions can neural therapy treat?
Neural therapy is best known for treating pain, but is also used for any condition where the autonomic nervous system is involved, such as asthma, migraine headaches, gastro-esophageal reflux disorder (GERD), sympathetic dystrophy, "nervous" stomach, irritable bowel syndrome, sexual dysfunction and irritable bladder.

6. Are cures possible from neural therapy?
Occasionally, one neural therapy treatment will cure a condition. More commonly, repeat treatments are needed. However, if even a temporary response is obtained the first time, repeat treatments are usually increasingly effective. A limiting factor in the success of neural therapy is the general medical condition of the patient. If the patient is chronically tired, nutritionally deficient or toxic, neural therapy is less effective.

7. Does neural therapy have any side-effects?
About 5% of the time, neural therapy injections may provoke an increase in pain for a day or so. This usually means that the injection was not in the correct spot; however, a painful reaction typically indicates that the interference field is nearby.

8. Are neural therapy injections painful?
Neural therapy injections can be painful, as scars are tender at times, but the discomfort usually lasts only a few seconds, is is far less than the pain being held by the interference field related to the scar.

9. Why is neural therapy not better known in the USA?
Neural therapy was developed in Germany, where it is considered a normal part of medical practice. Virtually all the neural therapy literature has been published in German; very little has ever been translated into English. Thus, the non-German-speaking world has simply not been exposed to neural therapy.

10. Is Neural Therapy Expensive?

The ReBalance Center does not contract with Medicare programs nor any insurance providers, so it is an out of pocket expense. A consult is necessary to determine identify your interference fields and plan a course of treatment, then the injections are $85 per treatment area per visit.

Interference of the Autonomic Nervous System function can
be caused by:

•  Surgery

•  Vaccinations

•  Injection Sites

•  Piercings/Tattoos

•  Trauma

•  Inflammation

•  Infection

•  Diseased Organs

•  Psychological Trauma

•   All of the above can               cause Interference Fields     even if low grade if they         are chronic.

Neural Therapy is safe and effective in stabilizing the membranes of nerves, sympathetic nerves and mast cells. It is used for anti-aging effects, vasodilation, as well as nerve and generalized pain benefits. Though there are vast physical benefits of this treatment, the emotional release potential of resetting the autonomic nervous system can be extremely powerful, in this respect, Neural Therapy has an antidepressant effect as it is a weak MAO inhibitor and inhibits serotonin oxidation. Neural Therapy truly is a Body, Mind, Spirit therapy for health and healing.
